SHREWSBURY BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION (SBA) TRAVEL TEAMS

Our SBA Travel Teams play in the Central MA Youth Basketball League (CMYBL), a highly organized and fast paced environment where skilled teams from surrounding towns compete against each other in tournaments, regular season games and playoffs.  This league is designed for serious athletes, grades 4 - 8, who are committed to developing their basketball skills at an advanced level.  The SBA emphasizes teamwork, discipline and fair play providing players with the skills necessary to play at the High School level.

Players must be enrolled in a Shrewsbury school and be in 4th - 8th grade.  Each grade and gender will have two tryouts.  If a player is new to the program, attending both tryouts is highly recommended.  
As this is a highly competitive league, players will be graded on the following:

  • General Understanding of Basketball
  • Ball Handling
  • Passing 
  • Shooting
  • Defensive Concepts (Man to Man / Zone Defense starting at the 6th Grade Level)
  • Offensive Concepts
  • Character / Team Player
Teams will be formed based on gender and current grade level. The recommended roster size is 10 players.
Beginning with the 2025–26 season, a maximum of two teams per grade level will be allowed for each gender. The top ten players in each group will make up the “A” Team. Additional “B” Teams may be formed based on player registration numbers and talent levels.
For age groups that had three teams prior to the 2024–25 season, that structure may continue.
Please note: placement on the “A” Team in a previous season does not guarantee a spot for the upcoming season. All players will be evaluated each year.
Players selected for a team will be notified within 48 hours of evaluations.

Please note the following for players self-esteem and participation:

  • All players trying out are not guaranteed a spot on a team.
  • Once chosen for a team, equal playing time is not guaranteed.
  • Please consider your child’s basketball ability prior to attending to prevent disappointment
  • Players not selected are strongly encouraged to develop skills in Shrewsbury Park & Rec Youth Basketball
  • Player selection is a one-year commitment only

Practices will begin in October and are at least twice per week for one hour and 30 minutes each during the pre-season.  Once games start in December, we transition to one 1 hour practice during the week focusing on fundamental skill development and one 1 hour 30 min practice every Saturday.  Games are played on Sunday. (Some teams will play an occasional game on Saturday)

Games run December to early / late March.  The overall length of the season will ultimately be determined by qualifying for the League Playoffs followed by the MA State Travel Ball Tournament

Try Out Fee: $25 non refundable 

Season Registration Fee (If selected for a team):  $375.00 (this does not include uniforms)

Uniforms Cost:  Approximately $125.00 which includes: Reversible Jersey, Shorts, Shooting Shirt, and Practice Jersey.  This package is mandatory for all players.
