We are excited to announce that Shrewsbury Recreation Department and Shrewsbury Basketball Association (SBA) have partered to make youth basketball opportunities in Shrewsbury more streamlined and accessible for families interested in participating. All information and registration for both Rec and Travel ball will be available on the Shrewsbury Recreation website.


2024 – 2025 Winter Travel Team Tryouts  - Registration Open!
4th – 8th Grade Girls & Boys 
Dates: October 5th 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM and October 6th 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Location: Shrewsbury High School 
Our SBA Travel Teams play in the Central MA Youth Basketball League (CMYBL), a highly organized and fast paced environment where skilled teams from surrounding towns compete against each other in tournaments, regular season games & playoffs. This league is designed for serious athletes, grades 4 - 8, who are committed to developing their basketball skills at an advanced level. The SBA emphasizes teamwork, discipline & fair play providing players with the skills necessary to play at the High School level. 

Tryout Information: 
Players must be enrolled in a Shrewsbury school and be in 4th – 8th grade. Each grade and gender will have two tryouts. If a player is new to the program, attending both tryouts is highly recommended. As this is a highly competitive league, players will be graded on the following: 
  • General Understanding of Basketball 
  • Ball Handling 
  • Passing 
  • Shooting 
  • Defensive Concepts (Man to Man/Zone Defense starting at the 6th Grade Level) Offensive Concepts 
  • Character/Team Player 

The teams will be formed based on gender and current grade. The recommended roster size is 10 players. If enough kids are chosen, we would have multiple teams for that age group. The Top Ten players will form the “A” Team for each gender/grade. Additional teams will be formed based on the number of players for B & C teams. It is important to note, if a player was on the “A” team last season, their spot is not guaranteed. Players that are selected for a team will be notified within 48 hours of the final tryout session.

Please note the following for player’s self-esteem and participation:

    1. All players trying out are not guaranteed a spot on a team. 
  1. Once chosen for a team, equal playing time is not guaranteed. 
  2. Please consider your child’s basketball ability prior to attending a tryout to prevent potential disappointment. 
  3. Players not selected are strongly encouraged to develop skills in the Shrewsbury Park & Rec Youth Basketball League or St. Joseph’s Youth Basketball Program. 
  4. Player selection is a one season commitment only. 
Practices will begin in late October and are at least twice per week for one hour and 30 minutes for pre-season. Once games start in December, we transition to one 1 hour practice during the week focusing on Skills and Drills and one 1 hour 30 min practice every Saturday. ALL games are played on Sunday. 
Games run December to March. The overall length of the season will ultimately be determined by qualifying for the League Playoffs followed by the MA State Travel Ball Tournament. 

Cost: 
Registration Fee: $350.00 per player (not including uniforms) 
You may register for the season after the completion of tryouts and being offered a spot on a team. 
Uniforms: $125.00 (Reversible Jersey, Shorts and Shooting Shirt) are MANDATORY. ** The uniforms are billed separately and due at a later date **
